RAB SELECTS FIVE REGISTRARS FOR EMS PILOT
Milwaukee -- The Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) announced today the selection of five registrars to participate in its pilot Environmental Management Systems (EMS) registrar accreditation program. The pilot, to test and refine a program designed to meet the specific needs of U.S. industry in earning ISO 14001 registration, will culminate in the accreditation of the five registrars.
The registrars selected from a pool of 13 applicants include:
-Advanced Waste Management Systems, Chattanooga, TN;
-DNV Certification, Inc., Houston, TX;
-international Approval Services, Cleveland, OH;
-KEMA Registered Quality, Chalfont, PA; and
-SGS International Certification Services, Rutherford, NJ.
"We were fortunate to have an excellent pool of registrar
candidates for our pilot program. I am confident that by working closely
with the pilot registrars we can finalize a credible and internationally
acceptable accreditation program for U.S. industry," said Joseph R. Dunbeck, RAB CEO. The EMS pilot program will include both an office audit at the registrar's facilities and a witnessing of the registrar's audit of a client organization. The registrars' clients will earn registration to the ISO 14001 Draft International Standard.
To obtain maximum benefit from the pilot program, RAB's selection criteria were based on achieving a broad representation on:
-size of the registrar,
-origin of the registrar, U.S. or non-U.S., -accreditation status,
-registrar's degree of development of EMS program documentation and organization, and
-profile of registrar's client organization for the witness audit.
"Because we want a diverse representation of U.S. industry for the witness audits, the business focus of the registrar's client organization was a key factor in selecting the pilot registrars," Dunbeck explained.
Industries that will be represented during the witness audit phase include: chemical, electronics manufacturing, primary metals and device manufacturing.
Documentation review and office audits for each registrar will begin in early July. The EMS registrar program will be open to additional applicants once the initial stages of the pilot program are completed.
The Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) was founded in 1989 as a not-for-profit corporation, supported by the income from its accreditation and certification operations. RAB's programs cover registrar accreditation, auditor certification and auditor training course accreditation.
